| Cultivation Advice | Bees and butterflies are especially attracted to the vibrant flowers and nectar of Monarda. A pretty bedding plant and excellent in the butterfly garden it also performs well among the vegetables where it works wonders attracting bees and beneficial pollinating insects. Monarda is easy to grow from seed and can be started early indoors in pots or sown directly outside once all danger of frost is passed. For indoor propagation, surface sow in pots or trays containing good seed compost. Lightly cover the seed, so that they are no more than 1.5mm deep. Make sure the compost is moist but not over wet and seal inside a polythene bag to maintain moisture levels until germination occurs, normally within 10-21 days at 20°C (68°F). Once seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant into 3inch pots and harden off before planting into their final positions in early summer. Allow 12 inches, or 30 cm between plants Resist the temptation to crowd plants too closely and divide clumps every three years to remove excess woody growth. |
